Childcare is one of the biggest barriers to self-sufficiency that teen mothers face. The reasons are myriad… The cost of childcare can be a huge problem as it runs about $10,000 per year and most teen moms make very little income. Although they may qualify for childcare assistance from the state, they often have trouble with the confusing application process -- or find that the state won't assist with childcare while they go to college - just while earning their GED or high school diploma or while working.

Most of our teen moms dropped out of school by the 9th grade. Education is the first victim in a home life in chaos. For many of our girls, hunger is a reality, and addiction and violence at home are the norm.

Hope House of Colorado's mission is to help teen moms become self-sufficient, which means addressing a complex set of issues, both financially and personally. Last month's blog addressed generational poverty and how difficult it is to bridge out of poverty because of the value placed on relationships - relationships that are often unhealthy. This month the focus is on financial independence and the critical challenges our girls face as they work toward self-sufficiency.
