Many of our teen moms start our GED Program with the preconceived idea that they are not smart. Their parents, boyfriends and even teachers tell them they are not good enough, they are stupid, or they can't do it. These messages are incredibly damaging to their confidence, outlook on school and ability to learn. And they create a fixed mindset.

Terrible comment #14: "Tell me how much your life sucks now." Too often teen moms are subjected to this "humiliation as a lesson for others" philosophy, which is yet to prove that it actually reduces the teen pregnancy rate. Ironically, many teen moms will tell you that becoming a mother actually saved her life, leading her to stop drinking or doing drugs, get out of a gang, or leave an abusive home situation.
